It’s not difficult to take an iconic photo in London, but there are secret tips for getting the best ones. The dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, for example, is a protected view, so it’s visible from any corner of the city, but head to the rooftop at One New Change shopping centre for the true money shot. Tower Bridge looks best from the ‘Girl and Dolphin’ statue on the South Bank, while a bridge over the lake in St James’ park provides incredible shots of Buckingham Palace. For the very best London landscapes, take a trip up to the Sky Garden and watch the whole city glow at sunset. Simply magical.

Venice

This must be the most photographed city in the world, so how can you find unique angles for your group selfies? Well, the shots that play best on social platforms are often taken from unusual spots ‒ whether that’s the top of the tower at Scala Contarini del Bovolo, or the secret dock behind Hotel San Moise ‒ so you may need a local’s help to discover them. Viator do a half-day tour with a local, who’ll even take your snaps for you. Don’t forget that the best views of Venice as a whole are often captured from the vaporetto water buses that slowly chug along its waterways ‒ for example, when going in and out to the outer islands, Murano and Burano). So take an afternoon spin, snap that unforgettable landscape, and say cheers for the memories.

Athens

The Greek capital is an incredible mix of the ancient and the gritty. Get to grips with the former with a trip to the Acropolis just before sunset ‒ the ‘Golden Hour’, as photographers call it, is the best time to capture the white buildings and ruins as they turn gold and then orange. To capture the latter, take a tour of the city’s street art, which makes a seriously fab background for selfies with friends. We love the one from Alternative Athens, which is led by a real graffiti artist.
