Even if you’re a dyed-in-the-wool year-round romantic, Valentine’s Day can have a special allure. It’s that time to tell your loved one how much of a loved one they really are. Romance, you know, doesn’t need to be cheesy, and so we’ve found some of the most atmospheric spots in Europe in which to proclaim your infatuation.
However, we know all that ILY stuff can get a bit mushy, especially at this time of year. So if your way of showing your beau that you’re in it for the long run is to take them to a ‘challenging’ museum or run a relay 5k with them, read on for some anti-romantic ideas for dates they’ll never forget.
ROMANTIC: Reynisfjara black sand beach, Iceland

For an alternative take on a traditional fave, this Iceland stalwart delivers in bucket-loads. As the name suggests, this achingly photogenic beach does indeed possess black sands, as well as towers of ‘sea stacks’ and basalt columns, making for an otherworldly beach trip that verges on the surreal, but is still somehow drenched in romance. If you and your beloved are wondering what causes the black sands, it’s simply because they’re formed from dark volcanic ash and rock.
Not to put a dampener on the romantic mood, but as beautiful as Reynisfjara is, it can also be a dangerous place thanks to so-called ‘sneaker waves’ – huge waves which appear rapidly and unexpectedly, even in calm conditions, and can wash away anything (or anyone) nearby. So, when you’re visiting, stay away from the water and simply admire the natural splendour from afar. It still looks awesome.
