This summer things are a bit different. The shift towards positive drinking means it’s the perfect time to shake up your usual holiday habits and try something new. Luckily, we’ve got some ideas to inspire you.

Whether it’s the first ice-cold spritz by the pool or that refreshing pre-dinner aperitif, adding more balance to those beloved rituals is a sure-fire way to get the most out of your getaway. Just ask Christie Knight, esteemed cocktail connoisseur and non-alcoholic drink aficionado

“Positive drinking has become paramount to how I enjoy my holiday,” she says. “Sipping that first refreshing G&T is such a classic holiday moment. If you’re driving or you don’t feel like drinking that day, swapping in something non-alcoholic like Tanqueray 0.0% means you still get to experience that amazing celebratory feeling.”

To help you distil your summer with a measure of positivity, here are five delicious zero-alcohol cocktails to pair with those unforgettable holiday moments. Chin chin!

THE ONE TO KICK-START THE NIGHT

Ingredients
50ml Tanqueray 0.0%
25ml lime juice
100ml pineapple juice
2-3 slices of cucumber or 3-4 mint leaves

“So, you’re back at the villa or the Airbnb, getting ready with your friends after a day at the beach and you want to make something fun and flavoursome before the night out. This is a great time to grab a shaker (a water bottle is a great stand-in if you don’t have one).

“I’m going for something colourful and tropical using Tanqueray 0.0%, juice from about half a lime, a few slices of cucumber and some mint leaves for freshness, topped off with pineapple juice. Add everything to the shaker with loads of ice and jiggle hard, then strain into a martini coupe glass.

“It’s fun and zesty, and the pineapple juice gives it that lovely foamy texture. A real crowd pleaser and a great way to kick-start the night.”

THE PRE-DINNER APERITIF

Ingredients
30ml Tanqueray 0.0%
20ml non-alcoholic bitters
A large handful of ice
Fever-Tree Blood Orange Soda

“People in Italy and Spain love ending the day with an aperitif, which is usually a short, sparkling drink that’s often quite bitter. It’s a natural way to refresh the palate and awaken your appetite before a meal, so if you’re looking for something satisfying to sip before dinner, this is a great one to go for.

“Start by adding the non-alcoholic gin into a short glass with plenty of ice, followed by the bitters – I like Aecorn – and the soda.

“If you can grab a fresh orange on your way back to the villa, peel the skin and roll a small amount over the rim of the glass and let those beautiful citrusy oils bring the cocktail to life.”

THE ONE FOR THE ROAD

Ingredients
50ml Tanqueray 0.0%
100ml tonic water
A handful of ice

“A big part of a holiday for me is the day trip. Whether you’re hiking to a waterfall with your pals or simply hiring a car and getting out of the city for a few hours, a Tanqueray 0.0% & Tonic is a great companion because it’s simple and requires hardly any equipment to make. And because it’s made with all the same botanicals, you still get that quintessential, citrusy flavour.”

“All you need is non-alcoholic gin, a nice premium tonic water, some ice and maybe a slice of lemon or lime to garnish.”

THE THIRST-QUENCHING POOLSIDE SPRITZ

Ingredients
40ml Tanqueray 0.0%
10ml elderflower cordial
A large handful of ice
Flavoured soda water (enough to fill the glass)

“For anyone escaping to the sunshine this summer, you’ll know how important the poolside cocktail is. Really, you just want something cold and refreshing that has that fruity flavour to match the moment, which is why I recommend a spritz.

“You’ll want a large wine glass or anything that can hold plenty of liquid while keeping your drink cold. Fill it with ice, add the Tanqueray 0.0% and elderflower cordial, and then fill it to the top with a flavoured soda. Now, the options here are basically endless. I love using Fever-Tree’s White Grape and Apricot soda for its amazing natural sweetness, but you could use a rhubarb or a cucumber soda instead.

“And if you really want to wow your mates, garnishing it with a few berries or some fresh herbs, like mint or basil, is a great way to add some colour and excitement.”

THE PRE-FLIGHT TIPPLE

Classic, refreshing and the perfect way to begin the holiday / Credit: Justin De Souza

Ingredients
50ml Tanqueray 0.0%
25ml lemon juice
125ml soda water

“A big part of going on holiday is arriving at the airport early with your friends and ordering that first round of cocktails. For me, something classic like a Tom Collins is the perfect complement for those pre-holiday butterflies.

“Essentially, it’s non-alcoholic gin, lemon juice and soda, but its light, elegant flavour never fails to boost my excitement before jumping on that plane.”
