French Riviera hotspots like as St Tropez and Monte Carlo may have the glitz – but a more authentic, artistic charm runs through Nice’s lively streets
A gallery hop around Nice is a great way to get to know the city. Start big with The Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain, an impressive building with pop art pieces by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, as well as flashes of blue realism by Yves Klein.
But much of the action is on the seafront along the Promenade des Anglais — a 7km curve of pastel-painted buildings named after the English aristocrats who first built it.
Order an obligatory “Salade Niçoise” while enjoying views of the Cote-d’Azur before a visit to the kaleidoscopic Marché Aux Fleurs Cours Saleya — a charming flower market in the Old Town which dates back to 1897.
The city’s back streets are lined with snug bars, restaurants and jazz clubs. Cave de la Tour has been open since 1947 and serves the region’s finest booze. Follow up with a lazy day of sunbathing on the beach. Enormous sunglasses are mandatory.
