Located in the Andalusia region of southern Spain, the city is one of the country’s oldest, with a Roman amphitheatre, ornate cathedral (climb the steps for that city panorama) and the 11th-century Alcazaba fortress making up some of the historical sites.

The Picasso Museum pays homage to the artist – undoubtedly the city’s most famous son – with over 200 of his masterpieces displayed, while elsewhere, plenty more new galleries are popping up in the city’s streets.

Food lovers can choose from swanky Michelin-star restaurants, family-run seafood bars in the suburbs and sugar-coated churros on the streets, and sip cocktails in the bars around the revitalised port. Handily, the buzzy golden-sand beaches of the Costa del Sol and the glam coastal town of Marbella are just a short drive away.
