Much of Marrakech’s charm is based around the sprawling square of Djemaa el Fna. By day it’s a place to take a stroll watching the acrobats and snake charmers; by night the carnival atmosphere becomes more cacophonous, thanks to the dozens of magicians, dancing boys, musicians and local street food stalls that spring to life.

You could spend days exploring the nearby narrow alleyways of the medina, bartering in the souks for handbags, carpets and jewellery. The city’s rooftops are a little more serene: stop off for a mint tea, or venture further to stroll between the bougainvillea at the Majorelle Gardens, once owned by Yves Saint Laurent – there’s also a museum dedicated to the designer just beyond. When it comes to awakening the senses, Marrakech has all bases covered.
