The unsung gem of the Balearics, Menorca is one of the Med’s most tranquil getaways, eschewing Ibiza’s party-party atmosphere and Majorca’s glitzy cosmopolitanism for something more pastoral and laidback.
The island is a certified UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – a testament to the radiant natural beauty that’s the main draw for visitors, dotted as it is with marshland, forest, hidden beaches, secret coves and aquamarine waters just begging to be swum, canoed and snorkelled in. Of course, it also offers a plethora of family friendly resorts – Punta Prima, Cala en Porter and Son Bou among them – all within easy striking distance from the travel hub of Mahon and the giant Splash Sur waterpark.
Otherwise, Menorca’s charms are more archaic, from the mystic Talaiotic settlements of Torre d’en Galmés and Torralba d’en Salord to the 18th-century Fort Marlborough (complete with augmented siege reenactments) and Saint Lluís’ ethnographic museum, housed in the beautifully restored Molí de Dalt windmill. Throw in a spectacular sundowner or two – particularly at beloved cliffside bar-club Cova d’en Xoroi in Cala en Porter – and you’ve got the Med’s most well-rounded escape.
