Seeking blissful beaches? Captivating history? Delicious local cuisine? The delightful Turkish city of Antalya could well be the destination for you.
Located on southern Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, this colourful city is the gateway to some of the most idyllic corners of the country, but stick around – Antalya is also a destination in its own right.
Visitors should first make for the ancient Kaleiçi district, many of the buildings of which date back to the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman eras. Its narrow streets are filled with dinky shops and cafes, and there’s also an atmospheric and buzzy harbour to stroll around. It’s tempting to spend an entire alfresco day here, but the nearby Archaeological Museum, with its stash of coins and statues, is one of the most impressive in the world; a little further out of town the ancient ruins and crumbling columns of Perge are just as remarkable a pull for the antiquity-minded.
Meanwhile, good food is never far away, whether it’s a mezze feast or a magnificent kebab – perfect fuel after a day sightseeing or relaxing on the city’s superlative sands.
