Start in the narrow cobbled streets of Gamla Stan, home to the medieval Storkyrkan cathedral, the Royal Palace and one of the world’s best Christmas markets – this is a city that looks even better in the snow.

But spring and summer are just as lovely. Saunter across the bridges linking the city’s 14 islands (it’s technically an archipelago) or head to the beach at Långholmen, where you can sunbathe on the lawn and cool off in crystal clear water.

Then, indulge in a spot of fika – that’s the obligatory pause for a caffeine hit and something to eat – in one of the myriad coffee shops, try the local street food (particularly hot dogs or herring) or feast on crayfish at one of the chic food halls, before spending an evening exploring cosy cocktail bars. And if you love to shop you’ll find everything here, from minimalist Scandinavian homeware to colourful vintage shops in the hipster neighbourhood of Hornstull. Refined, resplendent and really delicious? Stockholm has it all.
