Sun-soaked Alicante is one of the Costa Blanca’s liveliest cultural destinations –  but there’s more to this southern Spanish city than churches and clubs. Its location right on the coast makes it a brilliant choice for families looking to combine long, lazy beach days with fun day trips and delicious food.

When it’s time to get out of the sun, head into the shade at one of the best things to do in Alicante

And when you need that inevitable pit-stop, order a plate or five at one of the best tapas bars in Alicante

Do a day trip to Tabarca Island

Pack your snorkel and flippers and hop on a boat to the smallest inhabited island in Spain,  Isla de Tabarca. Have a stroll around (it’s only 2km long), then hit one of the beaches –  all are teeming with fish thanks to the island’s protected marine reserve status.

Saunter the promenade at Postiguet Beach

Grab an ice cream and take a stroll along the palm tree-lined promenade at Postiguet Beach. And when you’ve had enough of that, pop into a bar for an ice-cold cerveza. Or three.

Dine near the sea at Los Troncos

This informal assador, located just off the beach, is a great spot for families looking for a menu that’ll keep everyone happy. Croquettes, steak, burgers, fish and salad are just some of the options, while the wine list isn’t half bad either.

Head to Playa de San Juan   for fun and games / Image: Alicante  City Tourist Board

Swim at buzzy Playa de San Juan

This golden, talc-soft stretch of sand is one of the liveliest in the region. Join the families kicking back beneath colourful parasols, jumping the shallow waves and floating on inflatables.

Take on Water Games

You’ll find plenty of waterparks along the coast here, but don’t miss Water Games –  a huge inflatable watercourse that floats on the sea and is suitable for ages 4 and up. Jump from section to section, climb ladders and slide into the sea. Then do it all again.
