Many people head to the Canaries for winter sunshine: if you love lazing on golden sand then you can take your pick from dozens of options, from the swirling see-it-to-believe-it dunes of Maspalomas or the bustling boulevard-lined stretch at Las Canteras, in the vibrant capital of Las Palmas.

It’s not all beaches, of course. In Las Palmas’ old town of Vegueta you can dine out on traditional Canarian cuisine, stroll between stalls at the craft and bric-a-brac markets or take in the pretty Cathedral of Santa Anna, which gazes out on a square dotted with palm trees.

Fancy something a little more active? Adventures await across the island – and a hike through the lush, mountainous interior will make you feel like you’ve discovered a faraway mystical land, not a short-haul island getaway.
